About County

Located in scenic, beautiful northeastern California, Lassen County covers an area approximately the size of Connecticut.  It is a rural area with wide-open spaces and unpolluted, crystal clear blue skies.  It has a diverse terrain with thick forests, snow-covered mountains, and vast open high-desert agricultural valleys.

The major crops are alfalfa, wheat, oats, barley, and rye.  Livestock and pastureland also are significant crops.  Miscellaneous crops include alfalfa seed, strawberry plants, garlic seed, and mint.  The 2006 County Agricultural Commissioner's Report indicates the total crop value was just under $33 million.

Farm Advisors at the University of California Cooperative Extension office in Lassen County consult individually with farmers and ranchers needing advice, they conduct workshops and seminars, and they carry out research on local problems.  David Lile is the Natural Resources/Livestock Advisor and he is Certified Rangeland Manager #66.  Rob Wilson specializes in Field Crops and Weed Science.  Darcy Hanson oversees Lassen County's popular 4-H Youth Development Program, which stresses citizenship, leadership, and life skills to its almost 200 members.
